Marshall Contemporary presents the West Coast debut presentations of photographs and video work by Judith Stenneken and the photo-sculptural work of Nikolai Ishchuk.
Completed in 2017, New York-based artist Judith Stenneken’s (b. 1979, German) series explores our rapid modern existence through “transition as a permanent condition.” Textural prints depicting silent moments of temporary reflection uniquely frame subjects and spaces shrouded by layers of possible narratives. The artist states, “the pieces connect in conveying the transitory experience of life, best exemplified by the traveler.” Eighteen subtly powerful photographs and two projected video pieces, along with her self-published monograph of the series, will be on view and available for purchase. The artist will be in attendance on Saturday, July 13th from 4:00 - 8:00 pm.
Accompanying Stenneken’s installation will be the introduction of photo-sculptural works of London-based artist Nikolai Ishchuk (b. 1982, Russian). After receiving wide acclaim in recent European exhibitions, including a selection as a Best of Photo London 2019 by The Guardian UK, Ishchuk continues to further develop his camera-less deconstruction of the photographic medium to recompose its materials with fascinating dimensionality. Creating Serra-esque contours across expired silver gelatin papers, the artist explores what he calls “a photographic means to a non-photographic end.” Three unique pieces from the artist’s Thresholds series, as well as a concrete photo-sculpture, will be on view.
On the evening of July 13th, neighboring contemporary art galleries Praz-Delavallade, 1301PE, UNIT 5 and Galerie XII will also host opening events welcoming visitors to see a multitude of exhibitions in one location.
