Sproat Lake, Vancouver Island. Some places are best understood through metaphor: The poet Skaay refers to human beings as xhaaydla xitiit ghidaay: ‘plain, ordinary surface birds.' Creatures with more power - killer whales, sea lions, seals - know how to dive. They pierce the surface, the xhaaydla, it's called in Haida. If we go with them - if, that is, we are invited to go - we enter the world of the myths. - Jakob de Boer
