This seminal dune photograph by Brett Weston is one of his most notable dune studies from 1933. The 8x10 contact print is mounted on period correct Cresent Quality Board. The print bears an accession label on the verso from The San Francisco Museum of Art, likely from an early exhibition where the print was used.
Brett first encountered the Oceano in 1931 and photographed there periodically thought out his career until the 1980’s. Edward would not get a chance to visit Oceano until around January to March of 1934 on a trip down to Los Angeles.
People frequently asked whether it was Chandler, Brett, Willard Van Dyke or Galka Schemer who introduced Edward to the dunes at Oceano in 1934. Evidence shows that they all took or were given credit at one time or another, but Chanler and Brett were cited for the introduction at the 100th Anniversary symposium in Carmel in 1986 to honor Edward’s birthday.
