Artist Statement: For all our attempts at understanding and our efforts to create order, in real life things tend to overlap in messy ways and accidents happen. My instinct is to suggest this somehow in my art…set up situations in which the material aspect intrudes upon the idea. My solar system work “Heliocentric Model (Nike Mars)” presents conflicting notions of movement and gravity. The Sun and orbiting planets are depicted with found balls (baseball, golf, ping pong, etc.), and the illusion of planetary motion runs counter to an awareness of the balls having been thrown, kicked and hit in their ‘previous lives.’ Swirled and splattered paint indicate another layer of motion and gravity, while shelves supporting some of the balls shatter any illusion of planetary movement. As a bonus, the Sun is represented by a soccer ball…symbolizing the central importance of football (soccer) in the international sports universe.
